The lowlands of southern Sacramento County are defined here by a complex network of waterways and early agricultural infrastructure. The Cosumnes River and Mokelumne River converge in the south, guarded by an extensive system of levee structures that protect the surrounding farmland. This area, largely comprised of the San Joaquin de los Moquelumnes land grant, shows the transition from historic river-based settlements to rail-era commerce. The Western Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads bisect the landscape, supporting small hubs like Bruceville and Point Pleasant. Evidence of the region's early aviation history is found at the Franklin Airport, while the Mokelumne City (Site) near the river junction marks the location of a town that succumbed to the volatile nature of the Delta's floodwaters.
