Buckeye Lake and its surrounding alpine basins are central to this 2017 high-altitude study of the Umpqua National Forest. The landscape is defined by its complex hydrography, where the headwaters of the S Umpqua River and Jackson Creek are fed by numerous high-elevation springs and small water bodies. Named features such as Alligator Lake, Carmen Lake, and Cliff Lake occupy distinct glacial cirques or depressions within the drainage networks of Skimmerhorn Creek and Buckeye Creek.
