Buffalo Meadows sits at the northern edge of this high-desert landscape in Washoe County, where the hydrology of the Great Basin dictates the patterns of settlement and survival. The terrain is defined by a series of steep drainages and canyons, including Trail Canyon and Chimney Rock Canyon, which funnel seasonal runoff toward the arid expanse of the Smoke Creek Desert to the south. Numerous named water sources such as Tule Spring, Rosebush Spring, and Cow Spring suggest the critical importance of these isolated points for livestock and land management in a region where surface water is scarce.
