The Papago Indian Reservation encompasses a significant portion of this high-desert landscape in Pima County, where the convergence of several mountain ranges creates a complex system of gaps and washes. The namesake Burro Gap serves as a transition point between the Batamote Mountains to the west and the Sauceda Mountains to the north. This arid environment is defined by its seasonal drainage systems, most notably Tenmile Wash and Sikort Chuapo Wash, which carve through the Redondo Valley.

Evidence of human activity and natural landmarks are sparse but significant, including the isolated Coffeepot Well and a Natural Arch located within the eastern ridges of the Sauceda range. The southeastern corner is dominated by the Chua Po Mountains and Sikort Mountains, illustrating the isolated peak-and-basin structure characteristic of this part of the Sonoran Desert during the late twentieth century.
