Deschutes National Forest encompasses the northern section of this high desert landscape, where the volcanic topography of the Fort Rock Valley meets the timbered edge of the forest. The terrain is defined by prominent basaltic features, most notably Flat Top in the northwest and Reub Long Butte further south. Near the southern boundary, the distinctive landform of Ft Rock rises above the valley floor, a landmark well-known to travelers in Lake County.
