The Saint Joe River valley serves as the primary artery for travel and settlement in this portion of the St Joe National Forest. The small settlement of Calder is positioned along the river's north bank, where N Side Rd and NFD 50 Rd provide access to the remote timberlands. The surrounding topography is defined by significant elevations and drainage basins, including the heights of Billy Goat Hill and the appropriately named Spooky Butte.
