Calhoun City and Derma anchor this central Mississippi landscape where the Yalobusha River and Skuna River converge with a complex system of drainage canals. The terrain is defined by the broad floodplain of Shipp Bottom and the engineering of the Topashaw Creek Canal, which cuts a straight path through the bottomlands. These waterways historically dictated the settlement patterns of the region, visible today in the distribution of family and community landmarks such as Martin Lakes and Hurricane Creek.
