The Independence Mountains dominate this high-elevation landscape within the Humboldt National Forest, where the terrain is defined by a dense network of seasonal and perennial drainages. Several prominent peaks, including Independence Mtn and California Mtn, overlook steep-walled features like Jerritt Canyon and Steer Canyon. The hydrology of the area is characterized by high-altitude springs such as Deadmans Spring, Arthenice Spring, and Mahoney Spring, which feed into the intricate creek systems of Pratt Cr, Foreman Cr, and California Cr. This 2014 survey records a largely unpopulated backcountry where the primary infrastructure consists of the Natl Forest Develop Road 216 Rd, which winds through the eastern portion of the mountains. The map illustrates a complex topography of ridges and draws, including Connell Draw, that has long influenced the movement and resource management of Elko County.
