Lolo National Forest and the Bitterroot National Forest meet at a high-elevation boundary along the border of Missoula and Ravalli Counties. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent summits including Lolo Peak, Sweeney Peak, and Mormon Peak, which separate numerous glacial basins and drainages. This high country is dotted with small alpine water bodies such as Carlton Lake, McClain Lake, and the One Horse Lakes chain, providing a clear picture of the hydrological patterns at the headwaters of the regional creek system.
