Carney Butte rises as a central landmark in this high-elevation landscape within the Umatilla National Forest of northeastern Oregon. The terrain is characterized by a dense network of canyons, including Beagle Canyon and Yellowjacket Canyon, which drain the timbered slopes. Human infrastructure is concentrated near the Battle Mountain State Park and the adjacent Battle Mountain Wayside, where the Battle Mountain summit reaches 4,255 feet.
