Blue Mesa Reservoir dominates the northern landscape of this Gunnison County region, with its waters reaching into canyons carved by Red Cr and E Elk Creek. Large portions of the terrain are protected within the Curecanti National Recreation Area, where the topography rises sharply from the reservoir floor to distinctive high points like Dillon Mesa and Tenderfoot Hill.
