The high desert landscape along the border of Oregon and California is defined by complex water management and high-altitude terrain. The northern reaches of the Clear Lake Reservoir dominate the southern portion of the map, giving way to the sprawling timberlands of the Modoc National Forest. This 2015 survey illustrates how the Lost River and its various diversions, such as the Lost River Tie, serve the arid basins between volcanic landmarks like Carr Butte and Squatty Butte.
