Catoctin Mountain Park and Gambrill State Park dominate the western highlands of this Frederick County landscape, where the ridge of Catoctin Mtn rises sharply above the Piedmont. The transition from the forested heights of Bobs Hill and Black Rock to the agricultural valley floor is marked by a string of older settlements along the foot of the mountain, including the industrial namesake Catoctin Furnace and the community of Lewistown.

Lower elevations to the east are defined by the winding course of the Monocacy River and its many tributaries like Big Hunting Cr and Muddy Run. This area preserves several traditional landmarks such as the Utica Covered Bridge and Devilbiss Bridge. Genealogists will find several burial grounds documented across the valley, from Saint Pauls Cem near Utica to the Graceham Cem on the northern edge of the map, reflecting the deep-rooted rural congregations of the region.
