The Poteau River valley defines this part of the Ouachita Mountains along the border of Sebastian and Scott Counties. The small community of Cauthron serves as a central landmark, situated near the intersection of State Hwy 28 and Sixmile Cr. Local genealogy and land use are anchored by the Cauthron Cem and Kirk Cem, while the rugged heights of Poteau Mtn and Walker Mtn hem in the valley to the north and south. High atop the ridge, the Poteau Lookout Tower provides a reference point for the expansive Ouachita National Forest lands that dominate the northern half of the quadrangle. Smaller settlements like Oliver and Morgan Springs are connected by a network of rural routes including Shadley Creek Rd and Weeks Rd, following the natural drainage of numerous creeks such as Twomile Cr and Gum Br.
