About this map

The Bad River Indian Reservation Boundary defines much of this Northwoods landscape where the forest meets the southern shores of Lake Superior. The Chicago and North Western railroad cuts a diagonal line through the townships of Saxon, Sanborn, and Gurney, connecting the small settlements of Birch and Cedar. Local infrastructure is marked by utility corridors and a high-elevation Birch Ridge Lookout Tower, which overlooks the descent from Birch Hill toward the lake. Multiple waterways, including Denomie Creek and Graveyard Creek, drain the timbered uplands of Pine Flats. On the coast, Waverly Campground and Honest John Lake suggest a mid-century era of recreation and seasonal residency along the Marble Point shoreline.
