Penasco Flat dominates the western portion of this high-desert landscape in the Eastern Navajo Agency, characterized by isolated peaks and seasonal water catchments. The terrain is punctuated by distinctive volcanic or erosional heights, most notably Cerro Alto, which rises above the surrounding plains along with Cerro Flora, Cerro Orqueta, and Cerro Negro to the east. These landmarks provided critical navigation points across the arid expanse of The Vega. Sparse infrastructure connects these features, primarily consisting of Indian Service Route 142 and Ozark Rd, which facilitate movement between the occasional ephemeral basins of Laguna Colorada and Laguna Flora. The map illustrates a region where life and travel were closely dictated by the placement of these scarce water sources and the natural corridors between the cinder cones and flats.
