Gunnison National Forest and White River National Forest converge in this high-altitude landscape of the early 1960s, dominated by the massive presence of Chair Mountain and the jagged ridgeline of The Raggeds. The terrain is characterized by steep glacial cirques and basins, such as Buck Creek Basin, where numerous unnamed springs feed the headwaters of the Crystal River and East Muddy Creek.

Evidence of local ranching and water management is visible in the lower elevations, specifically at Jacobs Ranch BM 6989 and York Ranch. The Tomahawk Ditch and Tomahawk Reservoir signify the historical effort to divert high-country runoff for downstream use. This 1963 survey, updated with 1976 photogrammetry, captures a remote mountain environment where only a few pack trails and jeep tracks penetrate the wilderness between Ragged Peak and the surrounding national forest lands.
