About this map

The Sangamon River meanders across this Illinois landscape, defining the border between Cass and Mason Counties. The river's historical course has created a complex network of backwaters and wetland features, including Briar Island, Theivaught Slough, and numerous oxbow lakes such as Wolf Lake and Leeper Lake. These water bodies are flanked by bottomland that transitions into the more dissected terrain of the south, where Maximillian Hollow and Panther Creek cut through the rising elevation.
