Charleston anchors the northern reaches of this late-1990s landscape, where urban infrastructure gives way to the winding valley of the Embarras River. The map highlights a region of significant state heritage, most notably the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site and the Moore Home State Memorial near the settlement of Campbell (Farmington). These sites, preserved at the border of Pleasant Grove, mark the agrarian roots of the area south of the city.

The topography is defined by the sharp contrast between flat upland plains and the deeply incised drainages of Kickapoo Creek and Indian Creek.
