The Charlson Oil Field defines the industrial footprint of this segment of the Bakken formation, where resource extraction meets the preserved prairies of the Little Missouri National Grassland. Located along the boundary of Williams and McKenzie counties, the landscape is deeply etched by the meandering course of Sand Cr as it flows toward the northern reaches of the Missouri River. The creation of the Garrison Dam downstream transformed this valley, with the waters of Lake Sakakawea now filling the Missouri trench at the top of the map. This 2014 survey documents a modern section-line road network, including 44th St NW and 109th Ave NW, which provides access to the numerous well pads and energy infrastructure scattered across the high plains and breaks.
