About this map

Steptoe Valley dominates the western half of this Nevada landscape, where extensive Sand Dunes shift across the basin floor. To the east, the topography rises sharply into the Schell Creek Range, a mountain front marked by a series of vital water sources including Cherry Spring, Indian Springs, and Cottonwood Spring. This 1982 provisional survey captures the intersection of desert basin and high-elevation springs, illustrating how water dictated the placement of small-scale developments like the J Heroid Ranch. Human activity is concentrated along the mountain base, with evidence of resource extraction at several Borrow Pit sites. The mapping reveals a sparse but functional infrastructure centered around cattle and water, with Brewers Flat and Chicken Knoll serving as distinct landmarks between the open valley floor and the wooded slopes near Woodcamp Spring.
