Springfield Mine sits at the heart of this high-elevation wilderness, serving as a reminder of the historical resource extraction within the Salmon River Mountains. The landscape is defined by the intersection of the Boise National Forest and the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, where steep ridges and deep basins create a network of isolated drainage systems. High-altitude landmarks like Chilcoot Peak and Trapper Mtn dominate the skyline, while numerous alpine basins harbor secluded waters such as Riordan Lake, Chilcoot Lake, and Black Lake. A complex system of historical footpaths and pack trails, including the Thunder Mountain Trl and Bear-Riordan Trl, provide the primary access through the drainage of Trapper Creek and the expansive meadows of Upper Trapper Flat. The presence of the Meadow Cr Lookout on the northeastern ridge reflects the region's long-standing reliance on high-ground surveillance for forest management.
