Childs Mountain and the surrounding desert landscape are defined by large-scale conservation and military designations in the late twentieth century. This area of Pima County is dominated by the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and the Barry M Goldwater Air Force Range, which share an overlapping boundary through the mountain peaks. Settlement is sparse, limited to the edge of Gibson in the southeast corner. Despite the modern administrative overlays, evidence of earlier land use persists through scattered prospects and a Mine Shaft located near the Little Ajo Mountains.
