The Smith Wild and Scenic River defines the western edge of this high-elevation wilderness, where the boundaries of Six Rivers National Forest and Klamath National Forest meet. This terrain is characterized by steep ridges and glacial features, including the Elk Hole cirque and the alpine waters of Flatiron Lake. The landscape is bisected by the Elk Valley Road, which follows the deep incision of Elk Valley north toward Sawtooth Mtn.
