Chincoteague Island and its neighbor Assateague Island define this coastal landscape, separated by the narrow Assateague Channel. The residential and commercial center of Chincoteague is densely plotted along the island's western shore, featuring local landmarks like Christ Sanctified Holy Ch and the Chincoteague High Sch. To the south, Birch Town sits near the marshes of Sheepshead Creek, while several graveyards, including Ridge Cem and Mechanics Cem, anchor the community's genealogy.

The eastern portion of the map is dominated by the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, a dynamic environment of dunes and marshes such as Wildcat Marsh and Horse Marsh.
