1918 Map of Cienega Springs

About this map

The Animas Valley serves as a wide corridor between the high peaks of the Peloncillo Mts and the Animas Mountains in this early twentieth-century borderlands survey. Conducted in cooperation with the War Department, the map documents a sparse ranching landscape where water sources like Birch Springs, Fitzpatricks Well, and Cienega Springs dictated the placement of early settlements. Isolated outposts such as Cloverdale and the Lang Ranch are scattered across the terrain, connected by primitive trails through the high desert.
