Vermejo River flows through the northeastern corner of this landscape, where the high mesa country of Colfax County meets the drainage basins of the southern Rockies. The terrain is defined by a series of significant carved features, including Van Bremmer Canyon and Coal Canyon in the north, which transition into broader valley floors to the south. Transport through this often steep topography is facilitated by Valle Vidal Rd and Forest Road 1950, providing access to the rugged backcountry. A network of seasonal waterways, such as Van Bremmer Cr, Cerrososo Cr, and Encinosa Cr, feeds toward the Ponil Cr in the southwest. The presence of Number 2 Lake in the southeast indicates the management of water resources in this arid ranching and wilderness environment during the early 21st century.
