Bat Canyon and Coal Canyon cut into the high relief of the northwest, where the topography of Colfax County transitions from broken uplands into the plains. The drainage network is the defining structural element of this landscape, with Van Bremmer Cr and Cerrososo Cr flowing southeast toward the Vermejo River. These watercourses dictated the early ranching and transit patterns of the region, as evidenced by the route of Van Bremmer Rd.
