Cisco Grove and the small settlements of Rainbow and Big Bend lie along the vital transportation corridor of the South Fork Yuba River during the turn of the 21st century. This mountainous region of the Tahoe National Forest is defined by its deep historical layers, where the modern Donner Pass Road runs parallel to the path of the Overland Emigrant Trail. The landscape is characterized by high-elevation peaks such as Signal Peak and Old Man Mountain, interspersed with an extensive network of reservoirs and alpine lakes including Lake Spaulding and the Lake Valley Reservoir.
