Central Pacific and Ogden Line and Southern Pacific railroads dominate the high Sierra landscape in this late 19th-century survey, tracing a path through the formidable terrain near Donner Pass. The map documents a critical transportation corridor where the tracks cling to the slopes above Donner Lake and descend toward the rail-and-river hub of Boca at the confluence of the Little Truckee River. Numerous alpine resorts and stops are visible, from Soda Springs Station to the mineral waters at Heath Springs and Rubicon Springs.
