These narrow valleys supported a network of remote post offices and rural schools, such as Triplett School and Rosetta School, often situated at the confluence of rugged hollows and mountain forks.

Evidence of early 20th-century development appears at Clay Courthouse Station and the Yankee Dam PO, while the higher elevations are marked by landmarks like Schoonover Knob and Spread Bend Mtn.
