Clinton and the northern reaches of the U S Atomic Energy Commission Oak Ridge Area define this 1968 landscape in Anderson County. The area is characterized by the prominent ridges of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, including Walden Ridge and Chestnut Ridge, which dictate the paths of the Southern Railway and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The creation of Melton Hill Lake on the Clinch River had recently transformed the riverbank, submerging parts of the Lost Bottoms and creating a new recreational and industrial waterfront.
