Mining operations and remote ranching outposts define this high-desert landscape in Yavapai County during the first years of the twentieth century. The Weaver Mountains and Date Creek Mountains dominate the center of the sheet, providing the geologic backdrop for a surge in industrial gold mining. The famous Congress Mine sits at the southern foot of these peaks, supported by the S. F. P. & P. Ry. which connects Congress Junction to the wider world.

Further east, the settlements of Stanton, Octave, and Constellation illustrate the density of mineral extraction, with numerous sites like the Monte Cristo Mine and Planet Saturn Mine dotting the drainages of the Hassayampa River. In contrast to these industrial centers, the northern and western reaches show a scattered pattern of agriculture and early military history, from Old Camp Date Creek to isolated homesteads like Bitter's Ranch and McGovern's Ranch.
