Coos Bay and its surrounding waterfront communities are defined by a complex network of tidal channels and industrial waterways. The geography is dominated by Isthmus Slough and Catching Slough, which branch away from the main Coos River channel to frame settlements like Eastside, Bunker Hill, and Millington. This 2014 survey documents the dense residential and industrial grid near Blossom Gulch School while contrasting it with the winding, timbered gulches of the interior, such as Pogue Gulch and Manning Gulch.
