Black River flows northward through the heart of this Gogebic County landscape, dropping over numerous cascades including Algonquin Falls, Chippewa Falls, and Powder Horn Falls. In the southern portion of the map, the settlements of North Bessemer and Auvinen Corner mark the transition from residential areas to the recreational slopes of the western Upper Peninsula. The terrain is defined by significant high points and seasonal destinations, most notably Copper Peak and the extensive alpine runs of Big Powderhorn Mountain.
