Buffalo Gap National Grassland encompasses the majority of this landscape in Jackson County, where the high plains break into a network of intermittent drainages. The topography is defined by Washburn Ridge in the north, which overlooks the headwaters of several significant prairie watercourses. These include Big Buffalo Creek and its smaller counterpart, Little Buffalo Creek, as well as Fifteen Creek to the southeast.
