Cowlic and the settlement of Vopolo Havoka anchor this map of the Sonoran desert landscape in Pima County. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation shifts, where the Artesia Mountains rise to the northeast and the Alvarez Mountains sit in the southwest. Between these heights lie the expansive Sells Valley and Vamori Valley, across which a network of seasonal drainage patterns is visible. The hydrological character of the region is traced through the winding paths of Fresnal Wash, Vamori Wash, and Topawa Wash. Modern infrastructure follows the path of history along Indian Rte 20 and W Indian Rte 20, which provide the primary access through this remote portion of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
