Cowlitz Falls serves as a central landmark where the Cowlitz River and Cispus River converge in this high-elevation corner of Washington. The landscape is defined by the steep transitions between the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument. While much of the terrain is dominated by peaks like Strawberry Mountain and Tumwater Mountain, small pockets of human activity are evident at the Kelly Ranch and the settlement of Glenoma.

A network of resource extraction and monitoring features, such as a Gaging Station and several Borrow Pits, indicates the utility of the land during the 1980s. A modest Landing Strip and Falls Road provide the primary access to this timbered backcountry. The southern reaches of the map near the Lewis Co Skamania Co boundary show the headwaters of numerous drainages, including Quartz Creek and Crystal Creek, which carve deep canyons through the volcanic landscape.
