Cabell City sits at the southwestern edge of this high-elevation landscape, where the headwaters of Onion Creek descend from the peaks of the Elkhorn Mountains. This portion of the Whitman National Forest is defined by a dense network of mountain streams and alpine meadows, such as Crawfish Meadow and North Fork Meadow, which characterize the high drainage basins of the North Fork John Day River.
