About this map

Maine Central RR tracks navigate the steep gradient of the Saco River valley in this post-war topographic study. The landscape is defined by the high peaks of the Presidential and Willey Ranges, where early hiking infrastructure is well-established through shelters like Mizpah Spr Shelter and Zealand Falls Hut. The map documents a corridor of seasonal travel and small settlements, including Willey House Camps and the Willey House PO, situated near the dramatic notch terrain. Along the southern reaches, the vanished logging community of Livermore and the village of Bartlett anchor the valley floor. Researchers can trace numerous historical footpaths such as the Crawford Path and Davis Path, which provided access to the high elevations of Mt Jefferson and Mt Isolation before modern development altered these remote reaches of the White Mountain National Forest.
