Crescent Lake and a dense network of smaller basins define this portion of the Nebraska Sandhills. This landscape is characterized by a high water table that fills the depressions between stabilized dunes, creating a unique cluster of hydrology that includes Island Lake, Hackberry Lake, and Blue Lake. To the north, the terrain is marked by Old Lady Beam Hill, one of the few named topographic elevations in this otherwise undulating prairie.
