The Fra Cristobal Range dominates the western half of this Sierra County landscape, creating a dramatic vertical barrier cut by numerous drainage systems and high passes. Notable among these are the eponymous Massacre Gap, Red Gap, and Chalk Gap, which provide transit points through the steep terrain. To the east, the land flattens into an arid basin where the settlement of Crocker is situated along a network of utility and access roads.
