Cunningham and the surrounding rural landscape of Red River County are defined by the convergence of the North Sulphur River and South Sulphur River, which join to form the Sulphur River in the southern portion of this map. This area of Northeast Texas maintains a sparse, agricultural character, with small settlements like Halesboro, Lone Oak, and Rugby connected by a network of farm-to-market roads and county lanes. The terrain is deeply etched by numerous drainages, including Brushy Creek and Mustang Creek, which feed into the river system near Dawson Lake.
