Cibola National Forest encompasses much of this high-altitude landscape, where the Datil Mountains and Gallinas Mountains converge. The topography is defined by a complex network of drainages, most notably the seasonal Rio Salado and its numerous tributaries such as Miguel Chavez Canyon and Dog Springs Canyon. The presence of several stock tanks, including Blue Mesa Tank and a Rock Tank, suggests a land managed for grazing within the national forest boundaries.
