Core Sound serves as the dominant geographic feature of this coastal landscape, separating the mainland Down East communities from the shifting barrier islands. The coastal settlements of Davis, Stacy, and Sealevel follow the shoreline, where maritime life is evidenced by the numerous creeks and points like Styron Bay and Cedar Point. Inland, the expansive managed landscape of Open Grounds occupies much of the northwestern portion, while the Cape Lookout National Seashore protects the outer banks to the east.
