Valmont and Sacramento City sit at the western edge of this transition from high desert basin to the steep walls of the Sacramento Mountains. Much of the western territory is dominated by the Fort Bliss Military Res, where the flat desert floor gives way to prominent Dunes. The landscape is defined by the massive drainage systems of Dog Canyon and Deadman Canyon, which cut deep paths through the high country to the east.
