The Sacramento Mountains dominate the eastern reaches of this landscape, where the rugged terrain of the Lincoln National Forest gives way to a network of deep drainages including Deadman Canyon, Escondido Canyon, and Negro Ed Canyon. To the west, the arid basin floor is marked by the small settlement of Valmont and an extensive grid of rural roads such as Dog Canyon Rd and Fairchild Rd.
