Rocky Point and Deadman Gap define the transition between the rugged volcanic terrain of the Crater Range and the desert floor of Childs Valley in this corner of the Sonoran Desert. The landscape is characterized by its dramatic elevation changes, where ephemeral drainage systems like Midway Wash navigate the high country before descending into the valley. Historically, this region served as a corridor for travel through the arid Southwest, as evidenced by the modern path of Az-85 which traces the western edge of the mountains. This 2014 survey documents the boundary between Maricopa and Pima Counties as it crosses a topography dominated by prominent peaks including the Sauceda Mountains to the northeast and the Batamote Mountains to the south.
