The Pagilak River and its various tributaries define this remote reach of the North Slope, where the drainage basins intersect with the high peaks of the Brooks Range. Located within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the terrain is dominated by the steep slopes and ridges of Whale Mountain, which rises as a prominent landmark in the southern portion of the quadrangle. The map documents the high-altitude headwaters and drainage patterns before these waters flow north toward the Arctic Ocean.
