The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge defines this northern landscape, representing a massive expanse of protected tundra and braided waterways along the Arctic coast. Flowing northward toward the Beaufort Sea, the Niguanak River and Jago River snake through the coastal plain, their shifting channels and surrounding wetlands creating a complex hydrologic network. This 2023 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey documents the terrain within Township 7 North and Ranges 36 and 37 East, highlighting a region where elevation changes are subtle and the environment is shaped by seasonal water movement and permafrost.
